Programs Guideline Statement

The Emmanuel Center develops programs and events that explore and celebrate the connections among spirituality, the arts, the news and community service. Programs at the Center provide a perspective of religious faith that connects spiritual ideals with every dimension of human experience. Some programs include educational forums linked to performances, scripture and community outreach.

2011

  • Purim and Mardi Gras Celebration, a feast of music, masks, and entertainment
  • Introduction to the "Art of the Americas" Wing of the Museum of Fine Arts, a walking tour focusing on the spiritual context for the art and culture of America
  • The City on the Hill: Spirituality of Boston's Architecture, a walking tour of Boston's central neighborhoods
  • Evening of Poetry with Bonnie Lyons, author of Hineni and Meanwhile

2010

  • Psalms of Praise: a concert featuring Jewish and Christian musical interpretations of Psalms of Praise from ancient to modern times, with Zamir Chorale of Boston, The Orpheus Singers, and The Spectrum Singers
  • An Evening at the Museum of Fine Arts, a walking tour focusing on major spiritual themes reflected in the Museum's collection
  • The City on the Hill: Spirituality of Boston's Architecture, a walking tour of Boston's central neighborhoods
  • Talk-back series at the Speakeasy Stage Company, post-performance discussions of spiritual themes in theatrical productions

2009

  • Screening of The Bible Tells Me So, a documentary about religious perspectives on Gay/Lesbian civil rights, and appearance by Bishop V. Gene Robinson, with the Human Rights Campaign
  • Living Conversations, an series of interfaith discussions of the Book of Genesis
  • The Passions of the Passion: a discussion of Jewish and Christian interpretations of the narratives of the death of Jesus, followed by the performance by Emmanuel Music of Bach's St. Matthew Passion
  • Talk-back series at the Speakeasy Stage Company,
    post-performance discussions of spiritual themes in theatrical productions

2008

  • Screening of Constantine's Sword, a documentary about the Christian roots of Anti-Semitism, and appearance by award-winning author James Carroll
  • The Pulpit on the Silver Screen: Images of Religion in Hollywood,
    a summer film series
  • Harry and Holiness: Spiritual Perspectives on the World of Harry Potter, a forum on the Jewish and Christina influences in the popular best-seeling series of books and films
  • J.S. Bach's St. John Passion: Confronting the Roots of Anti-Semitism, a discussion following the performance of Bach's St. John Passion by Emmanuel Music
  • Talk-back series at the Speakeasy Stage Company, post-performance discussions of spiritual themes in theatrical productions
